Employee recognition done correctly reaps big rewards

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Dr. Bob Nelson confirms that service awards are a thing of the past and not an effective method to motivate employee performance and results.

Montreal Gazette Highlights:

Generations past were likely no more gratified with the gold watch they received on retirement, or the plaque ceremoniously handed out after 25 years of service, so why does it matter that their grandchildren aren’t pleased by the kinds of rewards that 92 per cent of companies hand out?

Traditional rewards drive a $50-billion industry that celebrates bums in seats and creates a culture of entitlement, says Dr. Bob Nelson. It doesn’t matter what people do -as long as you’re staying here and breathing you’re getting a bump in your salary and getting an extra week’s vacation,” he says.
